Per-Anders Jorgensen Food Photography Masterclass

Thanks to Good Food I was lucky enough to gain a place in the Per-Anders Jorgensen food photography master class!

Just under 400 people entered, and I was so thrilled to win - thankyou, Good Food!

The successful photo was a 'portrait' of one of my mother’s chickens ('Goldie'); I always knew she was special, when she was born I would feed her by hand because she was smaller and weaker than the others. Now she's blossomed into a stunning golden chicken with great markings and a very interesting personality!

The master class was held at one of my favourite places, The Essential Ingredient in Prahran as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. If you live in Melbourne and have a passion for food you will love the place, and they have all sorts of classes you can attend throughout the year - check it out!

P-A is one of the best photographers in the world right now, and is also the co-editor of FOOL Magazine, a must-read food and drink magazine which won the Gourmand Book Award for Best Food Magazine of 2012.

FOOL Magazine was created by the husband and wife team of art director/editor Lotta Jorgensen and photographer/co-editor Per-Anders Jorgenson. FOOL is published quarterly in Sweden, with a global writer and photographer contributor list.

During the master class, P-A invited everyone to photograph the beautiful lunch which The Essential Ingredient had provided.

Off I trotted through the store with my plate of food (that I had randomly styled), my camera and a smile. I stepped outside to use the natural light to take a few snaps - I got a few funny looks from passers-by, but that doesn't worry me!  I knew the courtyard would be too bright and I had no diffuser. So I went into the dark car park and used the stairs and entrance that lead into that dark car park - a great natural diffuser!

It was most inspiring learning from P-A and his wife Lotta on the day, what a beautiful team, thanks for the tips!

Here's one of my photographes from the day. Moody lunch photo, great light and fantastic ground shadow.
